Pre-pregnancy consultations

Some women are unsure about falling pregnant or need advice on optimising their health before trying. This might be because of the stress of a previous pregnancy that didn’t go to plan or medical conditions that complicate their health. A successful pregnancy starts before you fall pregnant. And, if you had a complex pregnancy or birth last time, there are often pre-conceptual strategies or early pregnancy treatments that can make the pregnancy and birth safer.

A pre-pregnancy consult is especially useful if you have problems such as:

  • high blood pressure

  • diabetes

  • kidney disease

  • thyroid conditions

  • a family or personal experience of thrombosis (clot)

  • moderate to severe obesity

  • mental health issues

  • or if you’re on medications that you’re unsure about

If someone in the family has experienced a congenital abnormality such as spina bifida, or genetic problem, pre-pregnancy advice can give you information to help you prepare and plan for a successful pregnancy yourself.

Pre-pregnancy planning can help you If your last pregnancy was complicated by conditions such as high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, premature birth before 37 weeks, placental abruption, miscarriage (especially after 12 weeks) or mental health issues after baby was born.
